Just for kids of all ages: indoors and something new this year!

Exhibition Manager's Diary.

22nd September, 2009: After a summer of rest, thoughts turn to creating another great event, building on the increasing popularity of the summer show. Over the next few weeks, information will start to appear on this page, starting with the line-up of layouts. Keep watching!

10th November, 2009: As our enthusiastic team prepare to take Almond Bridge on a 600 mile round trip south to the NEC Birmingham, our event seems a long way off but already most of the layouts are confirmed and the trade support remains solidly behind the exhibition despite the economic climate. There will be a few changes to the usual line-up due mainly to retirements but the philosophy is still to offer a good variety of around 25 quality traders. It is good to know that the Perth show is successful in the eyes of the trade and that modellers come along in increasing numbers to support the event. Once again, it is planned to have two halls and an opportunity offered by more space has been taken to invite Arthur Crawford to bring along his passenger carrying railway.

20th February, 2010: It was pointed out to me today by one of this website's avid readers (no names mentioned but HP knows) that the Exhibition Manager has been quiet for a while. The regulars will see an ever-growing list of traders and infact we are now looking at around 32 because we have some more specialists coming for the first time and, for example, we anticipate additional features such as a book launch at the show. The layouts are more or less all in place now; just two more to confirm. At this time of year, the exhibition seems still a long way off but from past experience, time will fly! I must sit down soon and look at a floor plan!

We are pleased to announce that the show will be formally opened this year by Provost John Hulbert, who along with Lady Provost Mrs Sara Hulbert, will be our guests on the Saturday morning. This is in recognition of the fact that just as Perth & District MRC celebrates its 50th anniversary, so the City of Perth celebrates its 800th year. Isn't it incredible to think that Perth went 750 years without a model railway club? Apologies for my terrible sense of humour!

20th April, 2010: The countdown to the exhibition continues and major landmarks passed include less than 80 days to go! It was very refreshing to have a real railway fix recently - the sight of Oliver Cromwell around the area reminded me why trains continue to fascinate and such an experience contrasted sharply with the usual procession of multiple units. Exhibition Manager shows his steam bias! Seriously, in bringing the usual comprehensive variety of layouts again this year we hope to cater for all tastes and also hope to inspire you if you are an armchair modeller.

11th May 2010: Final total is 72 stands and a period of intense organisation is underway. Look for the advertisements in monthly magazines Railway Modeller, Model Rail and Hornby Magazine.

23rd May 2010: Thank you to Ben Jones and the team at Model Rail magazine for publishing a feature on 50 years of Perth MRC as well as highlighting our exhibition. See the June edition available NOW.

30th May 2010:  A new trophy this year in recognition of our 50th year, named after a founder member and donated by another - Mr Bhob Stewart has kindly donated The Jimmy Robertson Cup which will be awarded for scenic modelling.

4th June 2010: I am pleased (relieved) that the first train movements on Wilberforce Junction have taken place! The halls are now absolutely full with the late addition of another society and also Harburn Hobbies, attending for the first time. Meanwhile, visitors to the show will see better access to both halls this year and see that once again, the Dewars Centre are pulling out all the stops to provide the best experience at the venue - such as a fabulous buffet service. Everything feels good! SEM

19th June 2010: Today we filled the display cabinets at The Dewars Centre with our display of 50 years of model railways. Anybody can go and have a look now.....

Meanwhile, our new layout Wilberforce Junction is ready to go!

23rd June 2010: Remember free car parking, including UNDER the halls. Also, the Dewars Centre is only 5 minutes walk from the railway station. Enjoy the show!

28th June 2010: Sitting with my feet up, just thinking of a great weekend and another successful exhibition. We have had lots of positive comments from visitors and exhibitors and will also listen to suggestions such as wider aisles next year in Hall 2.

I would like to thank all exhibitors, traders and societies who all contributed to what was described by the many visitors as a show of high quality, good variety and "friendly".  It is good to know that we have the right "chemistry" and have produced a well received event. The Exhibition Manager is happy!

I would also like to thank all the visitors for continuing to support our efforts to promote and inspire! Watch out for details soon of our 2011 show (our 20th) which will be held on 25th & 26th June.

We ran three competitions over the weekend.

Best Layout Shield: voted by our visitors, the winner was The Scottish Region Study Group with their excellent model of Alloa Station.

The Robert Bruce Memorial Shield: won by Wigan Finescale Railway Modellers for their detailed model Eaton Gomery.

The Jimmy Robertson Trophy: won by John and Jane Jacobs for stunning scenic work on their layout Nettlecombe.

At the Exhibition Dinner on the Saturday evening, attended by around 65 guests, our former Chairman Alan Smith was presented with a gift of appreciation by our club members. Stan Moug, Exhibition Manager, made the presentation.
